Offermann Updates Its Website (Finally)

filed under Raves & Rants

Offermann website
It's been a while since I last visited Offermann's website and I was pleasantly surprised to find the site updated. The design of the website offers no surprises. However I found it highly functional. The website serves its purpose as an online catalog.

In much the same way, the German brand's leather goods have the same attributes: functional, well-made but don't expect any surprises in their design. I do find Offermann an excellent alternative to Montblanc, at a fraction of the latter's price.

Visit Offermann's website at http://www.offermann.de.

Bonia Money Clip Wallet

filed under Raves & Rants

Bonia money clip walletStyle doesn't always come at a high price and this money clip wallet is a perfect example. Made of supple calfskin in black with brown stitching, it holds just your bare essentials. What I like especially are the unique card slots on both sides of the wallet that I've never seen on another money clip wallet.

Buy it at Mensfolio.com for $49.

Mont Blanc Nightflight Now Available In Sand Color

filed under Mont Blanc

Mont Blanc Nightflight
Mont Blanc's Nightflight collection is now available in a refreshing Sand color. The fabric, which is a unique blend of silk and cotton, is said to be as soft as velvet and as tough as nylon.

Nightflight's small leather goods include a 8cc billfold wallet, a 4cc wallet w/coin compartment, a coat wallet, a business card holder, and a 2-pen case.

Be slightly more adventurous in the new year and go for Sand color instead of the usual Black. Don't worry about the light-colored fabric getting stained easily. It will. But heck...Nightflight is about 30 to 40 per cent cheaper than Mont Blanc's Meisterstuck and Boheme collection so why not?

Coach Monograms For Men (Finally)

filed under Coach

Coach signature stripe for men
Given the success of its signature fabric handbags, it's only a matter of time before Coach applies this fabric to its men's collection. But since men will always play second fiddle to women in the luxury market, we don't really have that great a selection to choose from. Still, it's a good start. My favorite is a zip-top duffle that's ideal for a short weekend trip.

Buy it online for $498 at Coach.

As Ugly As It Gets

filed under Gucci

Gucci tote bagSeriously I don't know why Gucci makes shit stuff like this but it's as ugly as it gets, lacking any creativity. But since it's Gucci, and since there'll always be people who want their bag to shout Gucci, there'll be people buying this shit stuff. And at $620, it's really expensive shit stuff.

Cerruti 1881's Double "R" Makes A Comeback

filed under Raves & Rants

Cerruti 1881 walletAs Cerruti shifts more and more of their production of leather goods from Italy to China and India, I'm getting less and less excited about the brand.

We are still sticking to our guns of selling only those collections from Cerruti 1881 that are made in Italy, such as the new Club collection. This is a collection of small leather goods that's modern, refined and sophisticated. The double "R" logo that's seldom used makes a comeback in this collection and the change is refreshing. Manufactured using fullgrain leather with superior craftsmanship, it is available in black and dark brown.

Even though I don't really carry coins in my wallet, my personal favorite from the Club collection is a billfold wallet with a coin compartment.

Samsonite Scope Upright Case

samsonite_scope_upright_cas.jpgPost 9-11, with heightened security checks, air travel can hardly be described as enjoyable.

One way to lighten your spirit is to travel with a cheerful and interesting companion - the Samsonite Scope Upright Case.

Designed by Marc Newson, and a winner of the red dot award in 2006, this colorful suitcase on hot wheels, in their words, "successfully transforms traditional and utilitarian luggage, taking it to the next level of design".

Alexander McQueen's Novak Not For The Faint-Hearted Male

filed under Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen NovakAlexander Mcqueen's "It" bag - the Novak - now has a male version. In rich oxblood and looking like Prada's bestselling bowling bags, the he-Novak is not for the faint-hearted. Be prepared to stand up to challenges on your masculinity. Be prepared to get lots of disapprovals from other men. The plus point: it makes it easier for you to pick up a fashionista who's also carrying a Novak.

Buy it for 1,110 quids at Harvey Nichols.

Gucci Injects Right Dose Of Logomania

filed under Gucci

gucci_shoulder_bag.jpg
For those of you who like logos but don't want to look like you like logos, you may want to consider this shoulder bag from Gucci's Fall 2006 collection. The bag, which looks great slung across your chest, is made of black nylon trimmed with guccissima leather. If it's all nylon, it may look plain and boring; if it's all guccissima, it may be an overkill.

Buy it online for $700 at Gucci.com.

Luxury Pen Cases Now Available At Mensfolio.com

filed under Raves & Rants

Mont Blanc pen caseAlthough we have no intention to offer fine writing instruments on mensfolio.com, we just added some beautifully crafted pen cases that will protect your very expensive fountain pen. For a start, we're offering pen cases from Mont Blanc as they do not only make exceptional writing instruments, they also make very stylish and practical pen cases.

The bestselling ones are from the Meisterstuck leather collection, available in different sizes for 1-pen, 2-pen and 3-pen. The 2-pen and 3-pen cases come with an interior divider so that the pens will not scratch each other (pens do get into catfights in confined areas).

If you find the Meisterstuck pen cases too common or if you find black too boring, you may want to consider the Mont Blanc Westside 1-pen case. Other than black, it's also available in brown.

I really like ST Dupont's pen cases but they are obscenely expensive. Some are more than twice the price of Mont Blanc's. So we'll start with Mont Blanc and see how it goes.

Mont Blanc Meisterstuck Destined To Become Timeless Classics

filed under Mont Blanc

I'm writing this entry on a lazy Sunday afternoon at the Book Cafe along Mohd Sultan. This used to be my favorite haunt until the latch (or whatever you call it) holding up my Dell laptop's LCD screen broke. Since then we've not been very mobile cos its LCD screen needs to be supported by a heavy box for it to sit upright. With my new Dell Inspiron 630m, I'm happy to be back on my feet again.

In a previous entry Classic Wallets That Never Go Out Of Style, I talked about the Meisterstuck collection by Mont Blanc as a line of men's fine leather goods destined to become timeless classics.

And why shouldn't it? Mont Blanc Meisterstuck has one of the most comprehensive range of leather goods - briefcases, wallets, key chains, business card holders, coin cases, pen cases, desk accessories, diaries and organizers. I didn't really do a count but there are easily 30 products within the Meisterstuck leather collection. The only other leather collection I can think of right now that's as comprehensive is CL2 by Porsche Design. It's interesting that most people only pay attention to Italian-made leather goods without realizing that the best men's leather goods come from Germany (at least in my humble opinion).

The leather collection was a natural extension of the hugely successful Meisterstuck line of fine writing instruments. And whoever designed it in the 1940s did a great job relating the leather goods to the writing instruments. Each piece is made of black fullgrain calfskin fitted with the brand's signature "star" logo.

And what I find most admirable about Mont Blanc is that the brand doesn't rest on its laurels. You see constant improvements to the collection to keep it relevant with the times. Initially gold-plated hardware was used. But they have recently updated the hardware with palladium-plated ones.

The packaging also went through a significant revamp recently. The new packaging looks more classy. (And a lot heavier. Not good for shipping). It's obvious they have taken a few pointers from Cartier's packaging. Not surprising since Mont Blanc and Cartier are both owned by the Richemont Group.

Some of the all-time bestseller from the Meisterstuck collection are:

Mont Blanc Meisterstuck key fob because it's cheap (for lack of a better word) and it makes a great gift.
Mont Blanc Meisterstuck money clip wallet because it's simply one of the most stylish money clip wallets around.
Mont Blanc 3-pen case because you'll need an equally expensive pen case to keep your precious Mont Blanc Meisterstuck fountain pen.
Mont Blanc Meisterstuck USD wallet because it's sleek and stylish. It also helps that it's one of the cheapest billfold wallets in the collection.
Mont Blanc Meisterstuck business card holder because it's prudent and discreet and just serves its sole purpose of making a good impression.

Focus Is Back Again On Cerruti 1881

filed under Raves & Rants

Cerruti walletsI've not been paying much attention to Cerruti 1881's wallets and small leather goods since they shifted part of their production to China. The products' workmanship definitely suffered as a result of this change.

Fortunately they retained part of their production in Italy (hope it remains this way) and the Focus line of small leather goods is one of those collections that is manufactured in Italy.

Fine workmanship and understated style best describe the Focus line. The cowhide they use feels really soft and supple. And that's very comfortable because it's important that you feel good holding your wallet in your hand.

Prices range from USD81 for a key wallet to USD172 for a billfold wallet.

Here's a list of the wallets and small leather goods in this stylish collection by Cerruti 1881:

Cerruti 1881 key wallet
Cerruti 1881 tall billfold wallet
Cerruti 1881 square billfold wallet
Cerruti 1881 billfold wallet w/I.D. window
Cerruti 1881 billfold wallet w/8 CC
Cerruti 1881 billfold wallet w/coin compartment
